Local Food
Albert County has a rich diversity of local food. Grass-fed beef is raised on private and communal pastures throughout the county. Market gardeners grow a wide range of vegetables, many organic, which are sold at farmers’ markets and through CSA (weekly box) programs. Apples, raspberries, currants and strawberries are available from market gardeners and/or U-pick operations.
A few speciality items produced in Albert County, such as blueberry wine, pheasant, sprouts and seeds for heirloom vegetables.
Wild food is available for foragers (and often sold at farmers’ markets). Goosetongue and samphire greens are gathered from the seashore. Chanterelles and other wild mushrooms grow in our woods, while lowbush blueberries thrive in open areas. In the spring, sugar maples are tapped for their sap, which is boiled down to produce tasty maple syrup or sugar.
